Ngā Hua Akoranga / Learning outcomes:
Kia Rite, Kia Mau© which means ‘be prepared to take you stance’ is an educational initiative which aims to:

• Use Māori knowledge to create a fun and culturally enriching learning environment for all students. Students will learn about the Nga Atua Māori (Māori Gods), guardians of the world around us. Through this knowledge students will learn behaviours that will support them before, during and after an emergency. They will be able to identify a hazard and take the appropriate steps to keeping themselves safe.

• Create a space for tamariki to talk with their whānau about preparing a plan to use during emergency events.

• Teach students about Māori values and how they can implement these within their environment to achieve their emergency plans. We will extend & develop their literacy skills using material based around emergency management. Students will learn basic Māori words so that they can use them and apply them in everyday learning situations.

• Students will develop and apply effective problem-solving skills that will enable them to navigate an unsafe terrain.

This programme will ensure tamariki are prepared and ready to take action should they be faced with an emergency. Students get to take home a goodie bag and resources to share with whānau – to make a plan in emergency preparedness.

  • Testimonials / Reta Tautoko:
  • Newton Central (Year 5 and 6) – I just wanted to reach out and say a big THANK YOU! There has been an amazing response to the Kia Rite, Kia Mau programme—from both kaimahi and tamariki.
  • Bayswater Primary (Year 5 and 6) -Thanks so much for the wonderful sessions this week. They were clear, culturally responsive (very important in our setting) and engaging. The tamariki responded really well and were talking about it for the next couple days. I feel confident that they (and I) and have a better understanding of how to react to an emergency situation. And the visuals were incredible. Fantastic facilitation of an important programme.
  • Mission Heights Junior College (Year 8)- Thanks so much for the feedback and everything you have provided for our Kura. Our cohort really enjoyed the interactive workshop.

For a no-obilgation enquiry please contact us with your school’s name and location, cohort numbers (for Yr 5/6 and Yr 7/8) and preferred day of the week. Term 1 2025 is open for bookings – limited spaces.
